Teaching English in China: My life as a teacher

         Marie-Eve

When I first came to China on the 18th of August, I did not know what to expect. I knew I was going to teach English in a school, but I did not know the age of the students or which school I was going to teach at. What I did know was that I did this to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone.  I have worked in the insurance business for over 10 years and my previous job was as an account executive.  Let me tell you the business world and teaching are really far apart. Teaching is about passion.  I'm in China to make a difference in my students' lives by helping them learning a new language.  I really think that having a foreigner teacher can help them open their minds, and for sure speaking English will open a whole new world of possibilities for them.  The feeling you get from giving your own knowledge to someone who takes it in willingly and appreciates it is completely overwhelming. I never realized how extremely lucky I was knowing the English language. I think its wonderful that there are so many foreign teachers leaving their countries to pass on their own knowledge to others.  Being an English teacher is so rewarding. Teaching English in China is a real job, and the schools expect you to be professional and hardworking.  If you think about being an English teacher in China, with a little effort and the right attitude, it will be an awesome experience where you will learn a lot about the country and yourself.  I am so happy that I took this opportunity when I had it, and the memories will be with me for the rest of my life.
