Movies in China

For all those movie buffs out there taking that leap to China. Your worries were probably the same as mine. "Am I going to find an IMAX?" Or, "Will my favorite movies this summer be showing in China?" Yes, China does have IMAX theaters. As far as your favorite blockbusters showing on the big screen, big hit movies are craved everywhere just as much as they are back home. Having said that, if movies like Captain America Civil War or Zootopia for the children are what you are looking for, your movie watching experience in China will not disappoint you.

American blockbusters are always fun. But China also has its own great films. What, you don't speak Chinese? Well, no worries, most of China's top movies do include English subtitles while there are others that do not. China's cultural difference in the movie industry does shine through its movies. Take this movie "Mei ren yu" (Mermaid) for instance. It's a romantic comedy about mermaids. The movie in general is a big hit in China box offices. But movies such as this one and many others display the kind of humor that gets its viewers going. I'm from America and I have to say although it being a little goofy at times, I really enjoyed this film.

The experience I have in movie theaters in Wuxi China are not disappointing at all. I mean, what more do you want? A clean environment, popcorn, soda and a big screen. If I had to choose one thing I am not so fond of, it would be the popcorn throughout Chinese cinemas. It's actually candy corn rather than salted buttered popcorn like Americans like it. It seems that the sweet tooth is preferred while watching a film here. Being in China, I have a passion for learning this interesting language. It is my opinion to believe that language learning through watching films is always a good way to keep yourself interested rather than staring at a book all day. There are many good movies to watch and some television dramas as well that provide English subtitles and not too difficult dialogue to have to keep up with.

If you are learning Chinese and are looking for a good movie to use as a step away from the books, I would check out this movie called " Xizao" (Shower). It's a drama comedy about a family that runs a bath house in Beijing. The movie has not too difficult dialogue and is easy to follow. All in all, China's film industry is very accommodating and resourceful.
