2015.12.22 - JESIE Open Day - XIII
On 22nd December 2015, JESIE delivered a special open day to Taizhou High School in Jiangsu. The theme of the session was restaurants and dining, the aim being for students to be able to order effectively from a menu in restaurants. To set the context for the main activity, the session began with some brainstorming discussion of restaurant vocabulary, followed by an explanation of British currency. Food vocabulary games were than played. In these initial team games, rather than winning points or sweets (as is often the case), this time the students won pretend money, which they were to use in the subsequent activity.
Once the spending money had been awarded, the students began to participate in a realistic restaurant role-play, complete with mock-up menus and costumes for the waiters! Of course, different restaurants have different pricing, so not every group was able to 'go' to the same kind of restaurant! The team that did the best in the initial games was able to go to the best restaurant (the hotel restaurant), whereas the overall losing team from those games could only afford to go to a snack bar! For the other two middle placing teams, there was a choice of a pub menu or a coffee shop menu.
To assist the students with their dialogue during the role-play, they were given scripts to follow. Their task was to ask the 'customers' for their order, take the correct money and, in some cases, deal with a complaint just as in a real restaurant!
