2015.10.30 - JESIE Open Day - III
On this special JESIE open day presentation, 2 sessions were given by the academic supervisor.
The first session was given to senior 1 students and was on the subject of 'prediction'. Students always enjoy guessing games; so 'making predictions about things' is an engaging way to involve them in new language. The scene was set by talking about a fortune teller; which is something that connects with the students' native culture. As the session progressed, it became steadily more interactive, with students being shown pictures and short cartoons so that they could attempt to predict what would happen next. All this culminated in a group activity in which the students attempted to create their own story. This final activity was helped along by the use of picture cards, which the students could freely arrange for themselves in order to produce their story.
The aim of the next session (for senior 2) was to enable students to talk about countries and continents. In doing so, students also improved their geographical knowledge and awareness of the cultural differences between countries. Many Chinese students have thoughts of going abroad; for study or to experience something different, so this is a topic that interests them.
The session was rich in student participation and included a range of team games and quizzes. By the end of the session, the students were able to express their opinion on why they would like to go on holiday to a particular country. Overall, it was an engaging and enjoyable morning for all involved.
