Jiangsu Overview



Jiangsu, with its capital city in Nanjing, is known as Su for short. Located in beautiful and fertile Yangtze River Delta, Jiangsu leads China in educational advancement and economic prosperity by maintaining a strong focus on nurturing talents. It covers an area of 102,600 square kilometers, taking up only 1.06% of China’s total land mass. However, by the end of 2016, the permanent resident population had exceeded 79 million, making Jiangsu the most populous of all the provinces in China. There are thirteen municipalities: Nanjing, Wuxi, Xuzhou, Changzhou, Suzhou, Nantong, Lianyungang, Huai’an, Yancheng, Yangzhou, Zhenjiang, Taizhou and Suqian under the jurisdiction of the Jiangsu Provincial Government.



Jiangsu Province is rich in tourism resources, with natural and cultural landscapes complementing and enhancing each other. With a plethora of historical sites spreading across the province, Jiangsu has become one of China’s seven tourism provinces. Thirteen cities have won the title of “China’s Most Wanted Destinations for Tourists”.


The historical sites of Nanjing, China’s ancient capital for six dynasties, the classical gardens in Suzhou, Taihu Lake in Wuxi, Han and Tang culture in Yangzhou, relics of Qin and Han dynasties in Xuzhou, the water wonderland in Lianyungang, mountain forest and monasteries in Zhenjiang, and the flowing bamboo and rock cave spectacular in Yixing are so amazing that people are reluctant to leave. With watersides, ancient temples, delicate gardens, the landscape of lakes and hills, magnificent imperial mausoleums, and grand historic sites of ancient cities, Jiangsu is an integration of tenderness and strength.


The development of economy, technology and culture in Jiangsu is highly advanced, which made Jiangsu one of China’s top economic powerhouses. According to Report on China’s Provincial Economic Competitiveness Development (2014-2015) in the Blue Book, Jiangsu ranks the 2nd in 2016. Jiangsu, with its long history of agricultural production and its high level o commercialization, is also one of China;s most important grain and cotton producers. As one of the cradles of China’s industry, Jiangsu has ranked 1st in national industrial output for many years. Jiangsu per capital GDP and Development and Life Index rank top among all the provinces in China, equating to the moderately developed countries.











For many years, Jiangsu has been actively promoting foreign exchanges and cooperation with other countries and regions in the areas of economics, science, technology, culture, education, health, sports, tourism and environmental protection and other fields. Jiangsu has been committed to enhancing mutual understanding and friendship with sister provinces and states and promoting exchange and collaboration with all-round dimensions, multiple channels among different levels, which effectively contributes to the construction of the harmonious world, the elevation of Jiangsu’s international image and the development of Jiangsu’s economy and society.
